A lymphatic drainage massage is a particularly gentle and soothing massage that supports the body’s natural lymph flow and encourages a pleasant feeling of lightness and relaxation. Many women experience it as a calming time-out when the body feels heavy, congested or tense. At Faircare in Berlin, we offer this treatment as a private wellness service – focused entirely on your inner and outer well-being.
The Basics of Lymphatic Drainage
Lymphatic drainage is a special, very gentle massage technique that works with light pressure and rhythmic movements. The aim is to stimulate lymph flow and support the transport of lymphatic fluid through the lymph vessels. Unlike a classic massage, which works mainly on the muscles and deeper tissue, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD for short) acts directly on the superficial lymph pathways and follows the natural flow of lymph in the body.
Because the technique is so gentle, it is often experienced as relaxing and soothing. This soothing effect is exactly what takes centre stage in a wellness lymphatic drainage.
The Lymphatic System: Function and Importance
The lymphatic system is an important part of the immune system. It transports excess fluid from the tissue back into the blood and helps keep the body’s fluid balance in check. As lymph passes through the lymph nodes, it is filtered – waste products and pathogens are removed from the body in the process.
If lymph flow is disrupted, fluid can build up in the tissue and lead to swelling or oedema. A well-functioning lymph vessel system is therefore important for overall well-being. A gentle lymphatic drainage massage can support this natural process in a pleasant way.
The Origins: Manual Lymphatic Drainage by Dr Vodder
Manual lymphatic drainage was developed in the 1930s by the Danish masseur and scientist Dr Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid. They recognised that a gentle, targeted massage of the lymphatic system could stimulate the transport of lymphatic fluid. From this idea grew a distinct method that is now well known in lymphology, physiotherapy and the wellness field.
The Basic Grips of Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage uses several hand grips, performed with gentle pressure and an even rhythm. Four grip techniques are considered the classic basic grips according to Vodder. They all share the same goal: to guide lymph in the right direction and stimulate lymph flow.
Stationary circles
Gentle, circular movements with the flat hand that set the lymph in motion in the superficial tissues – often in the area of the lymph nodes.
Pump technique
A rhythmic, pumping movement that stimulates the transport of lymphatic fluid in the lymph pathways, for example on the arms and legs.
Scoop technique
The hand gently “scoops” the lymph in the direction of flow, supporting the transport of fluid – especially on the limbs.
Rotary technique
A rotating movement of the hand that guides lymphatic fluid across larger areas of skin, such as the trunk, towards the large lymph pathways.
Medical Lymphatic Drainage: Areas of Application
It is important to know that there is a difference between medical and wellness lymphatic drainage. In medicine and physiotherapy, manual lymphatic drainage is used as part of complex decongestive therapy and is carried out by specially trained lymph therapists or in clinics.
Medical areas of application include lymphoedema and lipoedema, oedema following surgery or injury, and other conditions in which lymph flow is impaired. In such cases, decongestion serves to reduce swelling and ease discomfort in the affected body regions – for example on the arm, knee or legs. The specific indication, the appropriate procedure and the treatment method are always determined by a doctor and the treating therapist for each individual patient.
Faircare is not a medical studio. We do not treat conditions such as lymphoedema or lipoedema, and we make no promises of cure. If medical lymphatic drainage is indicated for you, please consult a doctor or a qualified lymph therapist.

- BMS lymphatic drainage (biomechanical stimulation): an apparatus-assisted form of lymphatic drainage in which a device with fine, rapid oscillations resembles the classic hand grips and complements the treatment in a targeted way. Discover our Facial Lymphatic Drainage BMS.
Our team will gladly advise you in person on which treatment is best suited to you as a soothing time-out.
When You Should Seek Medical Advice
A gentle lymphatic drainage is usually very pleasant and well tolerated. Even so, it is not the right choice in every situation. Please seek medical advice before a wellness treatment if you have any health complaints, acute inflammation, a known heart or vascular condition, or if you are pregnant.
For medical questions or specific conditions, a doctor or specialised lymph therapists are the right people to turn to. This way, you can be sure that any risks are clarified in advance and that the treatment is well suited to you.
